Why Windows Media Player is Crap

Prelude: I've read this back and this article does not represent the "every day" DoggyDude. This is a pressure release rant which I enjoyed writing just to get out some of the frustrations caused by poor product design. Please read it taken with a grain of salt, but enjoy, hope you might relate.

I am SO sick of Windows Media Player!

Heres the shortlist of reasons:

  1. DRM Bullshit,
  2. Atrocious interface
  3. Spyware Mentality
  4. Bloat

I think i'll just list some of its failings:

1) Cannot control Brightness/Contrast on all Media (Especially annoying when watching DVD's).
2) The ability to control the video stream is dependant on the media (how stupid is that, its all Video! If its not streaming of a server you damb well should always be in control).
3) One watches a Movie, exits the player to do something else (say a call comes in), one reloads media player and press play again. What do you expect to happen? I certainly don't %*£&$ expect it to play my b**ody music library from a random location when I don't have shuffle enabled).
4) How many £"(%*& executables does a media player need! Not "$%*(&£ 3 thats for sure (wmplayer.exe, mfpmp.exe, wmpnscfg.exe).

Yes. I know what they are all reportedly for:

wmplayer.exe - Main Application
mfpmp.exe - Media Foundation protected Pipeline (DRM?)
wmpnscfg.exe - Network Sharing Component

If I want network sharing i'll $£&(£"&$ enable Network Sharing.. don't force me to have it loaded! If you have to have DRM £"*($& integrate it already! or at least put it in a £*(%!@ DLL.

5) Stupid interface (which is never in the right place at the right time)... what the "£%(@ kind of stupid tabs are:

  • Now Playing,
  • Library,
  • Rip,
  • Burn,
  • Sync and
  • Media Guide!
Where is the design? Where was the thought? A clue, NONE!

I loaded the £"$*(% player, I KNOW what is playing, i'm listening to or waching it (well I would expect to be). Library? If I wanted a £"$(&* libarary i'd use a database! >.<. I just want to play my media (I didn't want a Media Library, and even if I did, i'd want it to be an addin). Rip? Rip! Stop !"£%@ trying to be cool, your supposed to be a professional company Microsoft! Use something normal like Copy, Duplicate, Replicate or something (If I wanted to use something "cool" i'd buy a £%(&*ing iPod or a Mac). I want easy to use, I want purpose, I want well designed (in short, I want traditional Microsoft product). Burn? Are we trying to commit arson? NO! Write to CD, Save... Output to CD.. even if you have to use burn. Why the heck is is jumbled in with all those other different options?

6) No matter what options you configure for Windows Media Player it always trys to interact with the internet! Always! >.<. If your not running either a decient software firewall or a hardware one you would never know its reporting on you. I can't say I know what its reporting, but it IS reporting (often). Whatever it is reporting, there is NO reason or excuse for it.

I'm in a very bad mood with Media Player!

Imagine loading Notepad and it offering you script editing, Visual Basic, OCR, text sharing, mobile notes and sticky notes... then imagine that when you load it, it has a menu system like "Banner, Swat, Text List, Mobile Comments, Visual Basic".. what the HELL! You would never load it, but because Media Player is "integrated" I use the damn thing. Clearly, i'm a fool for doing this, but that makes whoever layed out Media Player clearly a moron.

Why not have the main tabs:
  • Audio,
  • Video,
  • Live,
  • Network,
  • Manage
Then have sub-tabs

Audio:

Sounds,
Music

Video:

Videos (Clips),
Movies

Live:

Tv,
Radio,
On Demand,
Service

Network (leading to the same menus without network option):

Streaming Media

Manage:

Just opens up the right folder view, configured as desired... with maybe a side pane so when u click on a file you can lookup its details and store it nearby (or linked to the file).

Its not hard! You've done the hard part, now make it good.

ps. Thanks for all the comments :) and its fine to vent, feel free.. I feel your pains!

  1. I agree. Windows media player is total crap. I just bought a new pc with vista and Windows Media centre and player are totally moronic. Media centre looks impressive but it is moronic. It is totally cosmetic. I thought perhaps it is because I am so used to iTunes, but I love iTunes. It is so easy to go to the iTunes store and buy music. I haven't had any problems playing dvd's, but certainly, to find music, to get anywhere in media player or media centre is (**&%&£()* crap. You are right. I just had a rant to a windows survey about it. I totally pan windows media everything. I was even thinking of uninstalling it. You can download iTunes and Quick time into your PC to do all you want with your media. Thank God for apple.

  2. I should add, that, the only drawback with iTunes for windows Vista is that there is no facility to burn a cd from the library, and you would need to make a back up as soon as it asks you, after downloading any music
    cheers

  3. Thanks very much :). Its great to know its not just me ^_^. I am going to have to check out iTunes! :D

  4. I can completely relate with that drm non-sense, that satanic process eats up cpu time like it's going out of style, to the point of where it makes drm video's extremely choppy on my machine (vista, go figure). Microsoft products are just built like shit honestly in my humble opinion. Been burned on my zune, vista, and I am definitely staying away from windows 7 now. At least my xp box used to be able to play games, the only reason not to switch to linux for a desktop for me. But that has become impossible on vista now as well, with aero non-sense turned all the way off. I am going back to my sweet gentoo, I used it as my dev environment, but it was awesome as a desktop as well when it was setup properly. Gentoo, here I come!

  5. totally unreliable garbage, freezes up, no zoom control, cant believe those idiots in microsoftcocks hav.nt worked out how to produce a program without serious problems by now, ther,ve been at it for over 30 years now, or is it done on purpose? how can their crap be allowed to be sold to the public when the software is faulty? and how has their crap products become so popular? got me stuffed.

  6. I can't fucking burn jack shit with mine

  7. Using Windows 7 and whatever version of media player that comes with it. I am fucking livid over this shit....

    I can't edit the properties/tags/anything of a file by clicking/right-clicking on it.

I have to struggle to figure out how to show the ****** current playlist let along the current song.

The hiding menu and the buttons with the arrows on it leave me clueless.

Damn, using that program makes me incredibly angry !!!!!

  8. how the **** do you add media to library? just added 10 albums to my pc, 4 have been added automatically and i have no ****ing clue how to add the rest. On top of the huge amount of albums wmp doesnt wanna recognose, theres those tracks it like so much it lists them twice! ****ing retarded ****

  9. Let's face it - the w@nkers at Microsoft aren't taking any notice of anyone. They have our money and we can go swing. Useless pricks should stop employing 7 year olds to write programmes

  10. I reckon that they are just having a laugh to see how far they can push users and still have loyalty, someone there checks out all the stuff before it goes out to the consumer, but.... after the good stuff is checked as good to go the laughing techies swap it all for a pile of shit and piss themselves laughing when they see all the complaints fro people just eager to get the next update. Lol they really must be ROFLTFAO!! yet look at the sales and business edition of shaftware like this do not even have media player anyway so it's birds up to the average consumer/shyte buyer.... hahahahahaaaa load a w@nkers

    ReplyDelete
  11. Oh and another thing!!! why have all these bullshit editions of windows? why not give everything to all and let them remove what they don't want instead of give the bullshit bare minimum then charge the arse off them for a feature they thought was already there anyway, only to discover they need to spend out more cash on ultimate bullshit!!!

  12. lol xD.

    Great post! Thanks guys/girls =D

I have found the joys of two things since this post:

    http://portableapps.com/

    and secondly VLC:

    http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/vlc_portable

Two ammazing things and without half the hassle (still doesn't solve the media library issue, but they are great solutions)

  13. I agree with everything above, windows media player is the largest piece of crap program on my computer.

    ReplyDelete
  14. i think drag and drop is the only way to just add media.

i create a playlist named 'sage francis' then add the songs to it in the play (must be short for playlist) tab, save it, and it asks for a name for the list, so i retype the title exactly i hope or delete the one i thought i was editing.

also in the play tab u cant make it any bigger than a third of the size it can possibly be, and it gives only the title of the file, even though this is where all the sorting occurs.

the most important buttons in play and burn tabs are tiny little 'nothing' looking buttons, from which a massive, unorganized drop down menu falls.

u HAVE to be in 'now playing' and right click on the video screen to get a menu that does all this cool shit. oh btw, dont use crossfader and auto-level volume, it wrecks your wmp.

i use this for the same reason as DoggyDude, it is integrated and seems to accept downloaded codex's from other programs. so i get this music library full of my artists... and all the sounds from age of empires 2... and i organize by artist and it adds lines through through-out the list between each artist name, looks very dodgeee.

sorry for venting my anger on your blog. and thankyou.

  16. WMP is terrible. since when does a fucking media player only want to upload half of my deadmau5 shit? like fuck you wmp i wanna listen to it all so quit being a fucking retarded program and do your job. i fucking hate having to drag and drop 30 times to see if itll work. WORK THE FIRST FUCKING TIME. FUCK WMP! ! ! ! !

    ReplyDelete
  17. Got to agree, WMP is absolute crap. So the library has become corrupted eh? (again) Funny how that happens with every version of 'doze right up to 7. Why can't it just work? Nobody should have to do this just to play some fucking music:

    1 Close Media Player

2 In services (local) disable 'Windows Media Player network sharing service'

3 Hit the 'start' icon and in the search window type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Media Player

4 Open the resulting folders and delete all the files within (but not the folders)

5 Re-start Media Player and wait.....it should start to add your music to it's database again, without all the 'windoze media player cannot do this that and the fucking other' messages, hopefuly. Good luck all.

  18. Windows Media Player 12 is a lot better than previous incarnations, it's almost useable.

I can't say the say the same for Windows Media Center though, it's a piece of garbage. It's impossible to add folders from a 2nd hard drive. If the database gets removed or corrupted then it can't find anything even on the C:\ drive!

TV recordings are made in .wtv rather than the more useful .ts format, whats with that? Garbage, pure garbage.

  19. Again like all above - I agree - WMP is really bad! I have a degree in Bioichemistry hence I am not completely stupid but using WMP often I wonder how to do something really basic...

Such as: I'd like to know how many seconds and minutes this mp3 has played and has in total?

Er where is this most basic of info? Not on screen....how do I turn this info on to be shown? Er...30 seconds later - nope...

Anyway I just installed GOM Player - omg this does all the usual things you would want and expect right out of the box.

Also as someone else mentioned WMP adds another component to get info from the internet about your music...er no...no do not do this.

Play the damn mp3s - I do not want you software going on the net and doing "stuff" especially without letting me know explicitly.

I need a light weight media player - not a user activity profiling big brother monitoring app!

One that has intuitive UI design.

I could design a far superior UI for WMP in a week. Probably less.

Microsoft has not really changed this app in a good way for what...10? 15 years?

    FFS! Arghghgrhgrhgrhg!!!!

  21. I'm so relieved that I've found a site to vent my anger with WMP AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHH.
Why the hell can't I simply add whatever videos I want to whatever library I choose??????? I simply want a library linked to all my TV shows and another linked to Movies yet it won't F*CKING do it. What I have got is a huge f$cktard list of videos with my movies and shows all mixed in together. Can anyone recommend a third party program that knows how to let people do what they want without attempting to be all whiz bang and totally getting it wrong?

  22. What a con! Billy Boy can stick Windows 8 where the sun never shines too after my experience (not) with pre-loaded Windows Media Centre / Media Player 12.0 - which stopped operating a couple of months after lappie was purchased. No easy fix download on offer and charges for Microsoft tech advice - not that any of the preceeding comments from those that have been using WMP make me want to find a fix anymore!. Apple o/s for me from now on.

    ReplyDelete
  23. It's been two years since the last comment but no matter, Windows Media Player is still a stroke inducing piece of junk.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm quite relieved, enlightened and pleased to find that I'm not the only one who thinks Windows Media Player is absolute crap. I've worked as a software developer for the last 40 years and if I had ever produced something as bad as that, would have been unemployed for most of that time. Ditto Skype now that MS are tinkering with that.

  25. I have had it with Windows Media player. The number of times I have lost music that I legally own, and why it decides to implement the bullshit DRM in the manner it does. Finally, it now completely crashes and because it is not easy to sync music to my phone, and my phone has lost music, windows media player crashes before synching. There was a time when media player was good.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Absolute Garbage WMP is. AND I mean ABSOLUTE garbage.
It decides what it wants to do, I seem to have no control over it other than playing a song.
That is it. Playing a song from a file.
Once in a while it will add a song, a completely random song to the library.
Junk, crap, shitty shitty excuse for anything.

  27. I just bought a new HP with Windows 10 installed. I thought that it would be better to just get one with the Windows 10 already in it, instead of buying, like, 8.1 and getting the free conversion. So, I had a 2006 HP with XP. It had a media player that was much better than the one that came with my new 2015 HP computer. Before, I could put in a disc, and the computer would automatically show a window, asking what I wanted to do, like play, or even rip the music. The new compuer does nothing. I find out just by myself, that I must go to file search, and select "this computer." Then it registers. So, that is one problem. It will not play a DVD or Blu-ray; it is slower to rip; and the library is only vewed by clicking on "music" instead of "library." I had two HP techs work on the issue - one could no figure out anything, and the other one just loaded down the other player that only plays disc - does not burn, or play Blu-ray. I thought that the acknowledge-a-disc problem was solved, but after all was over, it still does not respond. Microsoft needs to fix the programs. Also, the baic word processor and some of the other features that came with the computer are so much inferior to the ones that came with my old compter. If I had the money, I would dump this computer and buy a Mac.
